Actor Lee Byung-hun will attend Singapore’s first international cinema event set for next month, his agency BH Entertainment announced through a press release on Tuesday.
Lee, 40, has been invited to the inaugural ScreenSingapore to be held from June 5 to 12, and will take part in its Red Carpet Gala Premiere which showcases critically and commercially acclaimed films from Hollywood and around the world.
A number of A-list celebrities, including two-time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks, will walk the same red carpet. His new feature film “Larry Crowne” which he directed, co-wrote and co-starred, with actress Julia Roberts, will be the Closing Night Gala.
“As much as this is an event being held in Singapore which is positioned perfectly, both geographically and culturally, to link the East and West, we invited Lee Byung-hun because he is a top Hallyu star in Asia and has made his name known in Hollywood as well through ‘GIJoe’ so he is an actor who can link Asia and Hollywood, ” an official with ScreenSingapore was quoted as saying in the statement.
The official also added that Lee starrer “I Saw the Devil,” set for release in Singapore in September, has been a much-anticipated pic in the country since the start of this year.
“I Saw the Devil,” helmed by famed Korean auteur Kim Jee-woon, has won a number of international acclaims including the top prizes at the 17th annual FANT-Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival and 29th annual Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) and was pre-sold to France, England Taiwan and Turkey at last year’s Cannes film market.
In the film, Lee plays a secret agent plotting revenge against a serial killer, adding to the long list of roles he has played throughout his 20-year acting career which has made him a star in the Asia region.
He made his Hollywood debut in 2009 with his role as Storm Shadow in film “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.”
